Bacon Music Artist of the month Review
EJK won artist of the the month for December! I am extremely happy about the results and know this is one accomplishment, with many to follow, for this talented artist. There are a few things from my last review that I will magnify a little bit more about why I believe this artist is so talented and why I like them so much.
Living on an island on Greece, Elleni has had to reach out to expose her music and talents to the world. Opportunities can be limited, so the fact that she has been this successful is impressive. She is motivated and works hard, both are traits critical to success.
Not only does she sing and play instruments on a high level of skill, she also hones various non-musical skills. She is fluent in German, English, and Greek and currently working on a fourth. She taught herself guitar at the age of five and is now attending a music school to further her abilities. Constantly trying to better herself tells me that she aspires to continuously make better music. A characteristic that will pay off not only for her, but her loyal fans who will be guaranteed great music.
What helped her breakthrough the underground into world was her hit single “Pink Is Not A Color Its An Attitude!” The guitar is more of a soothing, slightly dramatic melody. Her voice does what it does best, perform. That is her strong suit that she wears very comfortably. One of the first things that went through my mind while listening to her music was all of the instruments. I was not all that impressed with them. They were not bad, but nothing amazing either. What I was impressed with was her voice. For only being 16 years old, her voice is pretty strong. I love the song Teacher Teacher. It really shows her strong voice. At 1:50 in the song, when she does a little strain on her voice to add some flavor, it reminded me of Axle Rose and the little things he would do while singing songs.
She did a similar vocal expression in Be Unique starting at 0:36 for the chorus. The vocal style says “feisty” to me. The lyrics to the song even back that up: “I’m a queen not a princess”. Most of her songs are about her perception on girls and how they act and dress. She speaks her mind and writes about things she feels strongly about. Another aspect that stood out to me was her confidence. The music videos that are posted on YouTube consist of just her singing and sometimes playing the guitar or piano. That is all. Not a band playing or any cuts between clips. To be able to perform in front of a camera for 3-5 minutes alone can be intimidating. I myself was entertained. Not because of the music, but her composure. She stood tall, showed enthusiasm, and smiled at times. All gestures and emotions that are inviting and draw the viewer in. Looking down the road at what her future could be, I see great potential. She has already performed onstage both alone and with other artists. Solidifying her confidence to play in front of crowds is laying the foundation for her to be a great performer. If she does become a sensation and tours in various countries, her performances will be memorable. Right now is the time for people to become devoted fans if you like to be able to say you knew someone BEFORE they were famous. She is a great artist in the making and at the early stages of a musical career. Opportunities are already knocking at her door and she answers everyone of them with determination and enthusiasm. Right now is the time for people to become devoted fans if you like to able to say you knew someone BEFORE they were famous. An attitude that reminds me of Avril Lavigne, instruments similar to White Stripes, and a strong voice that can compare to He Is We, EJK has the full package. Having the versatility to sing, play guitar, and piano is an arsenal of possibilities for an artist to entertain nearly everyone. She works hard and devotes time to constant improvement. An artist with a bright future is one to keep a close eye on.
Below is an interview that EJK was nice enough to take time and share with us. Giving us a more personal view of her and her experience as a musician. Enjoy!
- How did you first get into music?
I never really got “into” music it was always there, my parents would say I was born musical! When I was a baby my parents say they couldn’t get me to sleep without music playing, I was raised on rock, Pink Floyd, deep purple, Hendrix, Queen, all the greats!
I was given my first guitar at age five and never looked back. I was on stage at the age of eight playing Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana.
My first song “Future” I wrote at age 11 because of this I chose it to be the first song on my first album. I mostly taught myself guitar from free lessons on the internet, neither of my parents are musical.
-Who is your greatest inspiration?
I have been inspired by many people and musicians over the years, from famous stars to musicians I have met that were willing to give me the benefit of their time and advice.I guess when I was younger my biggest inspiration came from the great rock music I grew up listening to especially Queen. Although Freddie was gone long before I was born, his music and showmanship touch and influenced my life as a performer.
-Which artists or bands do you feel like you are most similar to?
To be honest I really try to find my own sound and I think all of my songs are very different. I have been compared to many artist especially female singer songwriters, from Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Anouk. I am very flattered but I really think my sound is my own
-What’s been the biggest trial so far in your music endeavors?
Recording my first album was the hardest thing I’ve done so far in my musical career. I flew to Hanover in Germany, where I met the other musicians. We had never played together before so it was a big ask to get the whole 12 songs recorded in one week, but they came through with flying colors. Also being the youngest person in the studio at 15 years and keeping the sound I wanted was a big challenge. I wanted to keep the sound “old school” so all the tracks were recorded live, which added to the stress levels just a bit.
Saying that, it was also the most rewarding thing I’ve done so far. I am currently writing my second album and am planning to record it in July this year. If possible I want to do it on my home island in Greece which should bring down the stress levels a bit, hopefully.
-What has been the most motivating factor for you to keep on going?
Doing something that I love and always striving to be better keeps me motivated, I can’t imagine a future without music.
-What’s your favourite part about making music?
Everything, from the moment I get the inspiration for a song to the reaction of people when they hear it. Most of my songs were inspired by my experiences and observations of life, I find writing a great way to express my emotions from anger and frustration to love. There is always something more to learn and create so with each song I write I grow as a musician.
Great work from a great artist that clearly deserves to be the Bacon and Music Artist of December.
